The Prineville Hotshots: A Tribute to Bravery and Sacrifice

On a fateful summer day in 1994, a lightning strike on Storm King Mountain, Colorado, sparked a wildfire that would go down in history as one of the deadliest and most devastating forest fires in American history. The South Canyon Fire, also known as the 'Storm King' fire, claimed the lives of 14 wildland firefighters, including 20 Hotshots from Prineville, Oregon, who were rushed to the scene to aid in the battle against the blaze.

The Prineville Hotshots, a highly trained and experienced team of firefighters, were among those who lost their lives that day. Their bravery and sacrifice will never be forgotten as they risked everything to protect lives and property from the raging inferno.

The fire, which began on July 2, initially seemed small and posed little threat to private property. However, due to a combination of factors, including strong winds and dry conditions, it quickly grew in size and intensity. By July 4, the fire had burned only three acres, but by the next day, it had already begun to spread rapidly.

As firefighters struggled to contain the blaze, two helitack firefighters were killed while attempting to flee the area. Twelve others were unable to outrun the fire and lost their lives in the inferno. The scene was made even more treacherous by a dry cold front that passed through the area on July 5, increasing winds and fire activity.

Despite the challenges they faced, the Prineville Hotshots continued to fight valiantly against the fire, working well into the night of July 5. Tragically, their bravery would ultimately be in vain as the fire proved too powerful for them to overcome.
